Reimagine: A Shared Committment

A primer on mutuality–and why it matters at work

What’s the latest scoop on hybrid work? In 2024, is it working for employers or employees?

One thing I know is not working is sweeping, all-or-nothing approaches to where, when, and how we work.

Before organizations make any big decision about when, where, or how their team works, I believe leaders need to step back and think about what is missing from the conversation: mutuality.

Curious to learn why mutuality is critical for an effective workplace? Read on!

Leaders making demands.

Strict compliance enforcement.

Employee boycotts.

Quiet quitting.

Have you experienced any of these in your own workplace? Or have you seen others respond with one (or all) of the above when conflict arises around where-to-work decisions?

It’s time to flip the script and start thinking about mutuality, or a shared commitment between leaders and their teams.

Mutuality (n.) the sharing of a feeling, action, or relationship between two or more parties; reciprocity; mutual dependence.

How would your conversations and decisions change if you remembered you’re all on the same team?

Employers don’t need to be in opposition to their employees, and employees don’t need to feel like their bosses are their enemies.

Assuming you have a strong shared mission and vision for your work, a mutual commitment should be the foundation of all conversations about where, when, and how to work.

Not sure where to start? We created a worksheet as part of our 3-Day Hybrid Challenge to help you reframe the conversation about work with your employees, and I’m giving it to my subscribers for free! Hopefully this will help you bridge any divide between what your team seems to want and what you think is best for your organization. That’s how we restore mutuality and trust in our organizations.

And without mutuality and trust, your organization will start to break down–symptoms include high turnover, low productivity, or poor client service. That all impacts your bottom line.

Let’s flip the script and reimagine how we make decisions at work, keeping mutuality top of mind.

Working Well

We’re kicking off another round of Aligned Leaders for a Federal Client. Aligned Leaders is our group coaching cohort - it takes MatchPace’s effectiveness frameworks and scales them down to be applicable for individuals. We’ve run public cohorts for anyone who wants to join, and then we’ve run them for a private group within the same organization. Click here if you’re interested in learning more!

Living Well

Last week we had Jack’s 10th birthday at Gravely Point - a park on the Potomac River that’s right in the flight path for DCA. It’s kind of amazing to have the planes go right over your heads. The kids had a blast!
